Volcano House is the hotel in Hawaii Volcano National Park on
the Big Island. Dating back to the 19th century, it retains considerable
charm. The lobby is shown here as it was around Christmas time in 1996.
At the altitude of the hotel temperatures are much cooler than we ordinarily
think of for Hawaii. The fire in the lobby fireplace is said to have been
burning continuously for 100 years, although they occasionally move the
fire for cleaning. |
 |
The dining room at Volcano House offers a spectacular panoramic
view of the crater. A homey buffet is served at lunch. |
 |
Outside the dining room, old stone walls bound the grass around the
hotel. |
 |
Volcanic activity varies from day to day. Sometimes there is nothing
evident, but most often there are wisps of steam and vent gases. Note the
steam cloud near the right edge of the crater rim. |
 |
One can drive a short ways around the crater to see the steam is rising
from the ground. It was a sunny day down near sea level. |
 |
Yes, there is definitely heat beneath the surface. |

Foliage stays green around a vent. |
