Nikko

A beautiful mountain town several hours by train north of Tokyo, Nikko contains the Toshogu Jinja, the final resting place of Ieyasu Tokugawa, the first Tokugawa shogun. Construction of the shrine began in 1636, requiring 15,000 workers 20 years to complete.

These photographs were taken in 1980. Autumn is considered the best time to visit.
